Tempest Toss'd

based on The Tempest by William Shakespeare

devised and performed by Adrian Hughes, Jocelyn Hughes, Alberto Ierardi and Giorgio Vierda

a Theatre 63 and La Ribalta Teatro production

Themes of magic, forgiveness, colony, and the feminine are explored in this reworking of a much-loved and oft-performed play. Combining text from The Tempest, Shakespearean songs, and sea shanties, this is the newest work by THEATRE 63 and La Ribalta Teatro, creators of the outstanding Hamlet: Double Bill, winner of the ShakeSphere 2024 Prize and performed last year at the Teatro del Giglio.

In the original Tempest, the sailors bracket the tale, appearing at the beginning and at the end of the play. But how much did they really know about what was taking place on the enchanted isle? Perhaps they caught snatches of words or music carried seaward on the wind. Perhaps the events were passed down faithfully from sailor to sailor or, perhaps, the story mutated, warped, and shifted over time... The actors are the sailors who play all the characters of The Tempest. But this is not simply a retelling of the story: it seems that Prospero’s magic still holds sway, and the pivotal characters (not necessarily those you might imagine) actually materialise, as the sailors dissolve, to defend their actions and speak their truths... Alongside the original Tempest’s verses, this play is filled with songs, some with contemporary Shakespearean scoring, sung and played on guitar, flute and percussions by the actors themselves.
